Oddfellows Conker Society
The initial idea came in 2000 from Rodney Annet and Martin Cooke, who by coincidence both listened to a Radio 4 broadcast on the British conker championships! It was too late to enter that year so they decided they would have their own championship in the Oddfellows beer garden instead.
It has taken place every year since then, apart from the Covid year. It is seen as a great honour to win and as such is taken very seriously by some competitors!
The conkers are supplied and marked with paint to prevent any potential for foul play with a treated conker. The collection and identification of the conkers is the job of Steve Jacks, the ‘Conker man’.
The winner receives a conker size cup in which to display the winning conker, a conker champion T shirt and their name on the winner’s board displayed in the bar at the pub.
The Inaugural year winner was Drew Riley, the 1st female entry was in 2004, Lisa Jacks who went on to win it and remains the only female winner. There have been a few people who have won on more than one occasion, the most wins recorded is 4 by John Baxter between 2006 & 2010.
