During the 1940’s and 50’s there were three green grocery rounds in the village and Leftwich areas run by; Tommy Dale, Walter Swan and Herbert and Cyril.
Herbert Warburton and Cyril Evans had a greengrocers shop on the Leftwich estate. They also had a horse and cart during the 1950’s which they would drive around the village to sell their fruit and vegetables. If the horse left a dung heap in the road the neighbours would rush to get their spades out to use it on their roses. On Saturday evenings after a hard weeks work the horses were taken from their yard in Church Street (often with children on their backs) up to a field off FirthFields where they enjoyed some freedom to roll and run on the grass. The Black Smith from Lower Peover would come regularly to shoe the horse.
The couple worked through rain and shine. They were regarded fondly by villagers and responded in kind by giving free fruit to the children. They were affectionately known as “Sherbert and Squirrel” As the use of horses declined they bought a small van from which they sold their vegetable and fruit
If you were going to be away from home you could leave your bag on your door handle with a fiver and a list, on return you would find your veg and the change.
They always had a bonfire night celebration at the yard in Church Street inviting the neighbours along to join them.
